Dancing Freedom arose organically though founder, Samantha Sweetwater’s 27 years of dance inquiry into the experience of healing, consciousness, nature and connection through the body. She has been supported in her journey by the work and devotion of all of these people. We dance on their shoulders. They have created a powerful platform for ALL OF US TO GROW.
We would like to give tribute to our “ancestors”: the founders of Contact Improvisation, the many women and men who have given their lives to create the vast body of work we know as contemporary somatics, the communities who co-created and perpetuated Barefoot Boogie and free form Dance Jams all over the world, particularly the Northern California Dance Collective, and all of the un-named thousands of people around the world who have not forgotten how to bring people together to inspire and heal community through dance. We want to thank Gabrielle Roth, founder of the Five Rhythms, for her fearless leadership in anchoring the emergent field of conscious dance. Dancing Freedom Practices are informed by the Wisdom Paths of Vedic Yoga, the Essene Way, The Path of Reiki, Tantra, Somatics, Contemporary Dance, Contact Improvisation, Non-Violent Communication, Chi Kung, Zen, Native American Shamanism, Sufi Mysticism and the teachings of contemporary masters Eckart Tolle, Dan Winters, Gregg Bradden and Carolyn Myss.
We also bow to our peers in the conscious dance movement: Vin Marti and Soul Motion, Toni Bergins and Journey Dance, Parashakti and Dance of Liberation, and NIA. Dancing Freedom is co-emergent with all of these practices and teachings. We are ALL mapping and traversing universal patterns of embodiment and consciousness through the work we share, and offering participants different ways to access these universal experiences through a blessed multiplicity of coherent practices. It takes great courage to bring this work forward, because, as a culture, we are still healing the perceived split between spirit and matter, soul and body and the world and spirit. THIS IS HEALING WORK! We are so grateful to be a part of such a vibrant, diverse and inspired community!
